Do Caesarean cases need to declared ?

Updated: May 9, 2022

Good morning, friends. This is my very first blog post. So, don't judge my writing skills.

A new human being is born. But, how the newborn is brought into this world seems to have drastically changed in the last few decades.

Instead of normal vaginal delivery, caesarean section (C-section) is the preferred mode of childbirth. Some ladies prefer it on various grounds including avoidance of labour pains, delivery at an appropriate time, etc. This is called elective caesarean. But, in most cases, the physician or surgeon decides the mode of delivery. This is called emergency caesarean, and is done to reduce the death rate, and illness of mother and child due to a medical conditions (geriatric pregnancies, multiple children in womb, umbilical cord problems, etc).

Normal delivery or Caesarean delivery ?

In many hospitals, vaginal delivery is not normal, but is comparatively rare. The most absurd reason for surgery being - "The due date has passed by a couple of days". Instead of inducing labour pains. hospitals go for surgery, when there is no medical risk to the mother or child. This is of course expensive for the lady delivering the child. Also, it is not natural, and hence, is likely to create health problems (allergies and breathing issues in child, sepsis / infection, risky future pregnancies, etc).

In India, many states have more than 30% caesarean cases (which is pretty high), the recommended caesarean rates being 10%. Surely, it isn't a tik tok trend now, is it? So, many people are now desperately looking for hospitals where delivery is done normally. This is also expensive (not as much as c-section), but it is much safer for both the mother and the child.

Now the question I pose is this.

Whether legislation should be made to disclose the number of caesarean cases in every hospital? (not percentage values, but the actual numbers)

I hope this short article gave you some "food for your thought". Let me know in the comments what your thoughts on this topic are. See you soon with another post, thank you!
