Another common women's problem after our periods !

Most of us have heard about urine infection which is also called Urinary Tract infection (UTI). If you are a woman, you have most likely experienced it as well. Women, in general, are more prone to this problem than men. Sometimes, it may even become chronic i.e, it can stay for a long time.

WHAT? WHY? SYMPTOMS?

Urinary tract infection is a kind of infection that affects your genital area. It is caused due to inflammation and excessive bacterial growth around the genital area.

The main causes of this infection include -

  • Excessive bile i.e, pitta in the body

  • Wrong eating habits

  • Improper sexual hygiene

The most common symptoms of UTI include -

  • Painful urination

  • Dark, cloudy or foul smelling urine

  • Burning sensation while urinating

  • Frequent & scanty urination

The pain may be mild or severe, depending on how bad your infection is.

DO'S & DON'TS

Cleansing the bladder is very important to prevent and overcome bacterial growth. For this purpose, you can drink Nannari sharbat, bael sharbat, aloe vera juice, cumin water, buttermilk, or lemon rasam 2-3 times a day. These drinks are known to cleanse the bladder and quickly remove any burning sensation.

When suffering from urine infection, stay away from sugary foods. If you have constipation, get rid of it. Constipation and indulging in sugary foods will only increase the bacterial growth. The infection can make you weak, so make sure to eat light, yet nutritious home cooked food and drink lots of fluid (water, soups, sharbats, etc).

REMEDIES

Even though urine infection is a persistent problem, it can be easily treated at home using some simple and effective natural remedies. The remedies I will tell you are time-tested, some of which my mother and other family members have themselves benefitted from. For best results, follow remedy 1 and 2 along with any one of the food based remedies that I mention.

  1. Wet abdominal pack : A wet pack on the stomach will cool the body, clean the blood, tone the abdominal muscles and helps in faster relief. To prepare a wet pack, take a thick cotton cloth and wet it. Squeeze out excess water from it. Once that's done, lie down on your back and place this wet pack on your stomach below your bellybutton for min. 30 mins. After removing it, don't eat or drink anything for at least 30 mins. Make sure to apply the pack on an empty stomach or 2 hrs after a meal.

  2. Genital wash : Wash the genital area with warm salt water. Do this once or twice a day to reduce the burning and reduce bacterial growth. Salt water is anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial.

  3. Sesame oil (cold-pressed) : Drink 1 tsp of sesame oil with 2 tsp of water. Do this 3 times a day. Instead of plain water, water used to soak boiled rice overnight can also be used.

  4. Tamarind juice : Extract tamarind juice from lemon-sized portion of old tamarind. Drinking this once a day is sufficient for getting relief from the infection.

  5. Warm abdominal bath : Taking a warm abdominal bath will work wonders. To prepare the bath, pour some warm water in a shallow tub. Once this is done, simply sit in the tub with your legs outside the tub for at least 10-15 mins. The water should be upto your navel i.e, belly button.

  6. Hot abdominal pack : Wet a piece of cotton cloth in hot water and squeeze excess water. When the cloth is bearably hot, place it on your stomach covering the lower abdomen. Replace the cloth when the cloth becomes cold. Do this a few times to get rid of inflammation and discomfort.

  7. White dammer : Powder White dammer, and sift it to get a fine powder. White dammer is also called safed daamar in hindi. Mix a pinch of this powder in warm water and drink it. Do this just 3 times in total to get rid of burning sensation, blockage and pus in urinary passage.
